Members of the Boys’ Varsity Soccer Team spent a week of their spring vacation in Virginia doing a bike-a-thon to raise money for the Lutanda Soccer Academy, a newly formed organization designed to help disadvantaged boys and girls in Lusaka, Zambia further their academic opportunities using soccer as the vehicle. Along with Mr. and Mrs. Moodey and their son Noah, the group consisted of User Kushaina ’10, Alex Perkins ’11, Henry Fee ’12, Danny Lockhart ’12, Austin Nick ’12, Brandon Allen ’13, Zeiko Lewis ’13, and Noah Sinkoff ’13.

Starting in Roanoke and working their way north to Front Royal, the group rode 180 miles in five days over the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive. Though most members of the trip had little riding experience, they all did an incredible job in some of the most challenging terrain the east coast has to offer, including a ten-mile hill climb up and over the highest peak on the Parkway in Virginia, Apple Orchard Mountain, which stands at 3,950 ft. In addition to the cycling, the boys were able to enjoy some other activities on the trip such as a stop at the Booker T. Washington National Memorial, a visit to Charlottesville that included a great team feed at Mr. Moodey’s godparents’ home and a tour of the University of Virginia’s campus, and several nights of camping in Virginia’s State Parks.

The cycling trip was a great success, as the group not only enjoyed the experience but also raised $10,000 for the Lutanda Soccer Academy. In June, Mr. Moodey, Mr. Skoglund, Alex Perkins ’11, Henry Fee ’12, Danny Lockhart ’12, and Noah Sinkoff ’13 will travel to Africa to spend one week in Lusaka, Zambia at the Lutanda Soccer Academy and one week in Johannesburg, South Africa, where they will have the opportunity to attend several World Cup matches.
